In Namibia’s northeast, the river changes the rhythm of a journey. Around Rundu and eastward toward Divundu, the Okavango runs beside villages, lodges and stretches of woodland. A stay along its banks gives you time to experience the water as part of the trip, not just a view from the road.

Plan a route with room for the river as well as the road.

Begin with the river

Rundu makes a practical starting point for the Kavango East stretch. From there, give yourself time to travel toward Divundu and choose a riverside base that fits your plans. Before setting off, confirm the lodge’s actual location and the final approach road: an address described as “near Rundu” can still mean a significant drive.

Make space for the quieter hours

Early morning and late afternoon are good times to ask about guided boat outings and birding. Activities, routes and conditions vary by operator and season, so arrange them with your host rather than assuming they are included in a room rate. A slower day at the lodge can be as memorable as a full itinerary.

Explore around Divundu

Popa Falls is a series of rapids on the Okavango River, not a high waterfall. The nearby Mahango and Buffalo core areas of Bwabwata National Park offer a different landscape of floodplain and woodland. Check current access, conditions and vehicle needs with the park or your host before planning a self-drive excursion.

Choose a base, then build your days

Compare room types, meal arrangements, activities and the full quoted cost. If you are travelling with children or arriving late, ask about the details that matter to your group. You can start with Kayova River Lodge, around 110 km from Rundu toward Divundu, and browse its rooms and river photos before enquiring directly.

For destination details, see Namibia’s Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism pages for Bwabwata National Park and Popa Falls Game Park. Confirm current travel and park information before departure.
