How to calculate move-in costs

Rent is only one part of the amount you may need before moving. Compare each property using the same cost list.

Start with known amounts

  • First month’s rent
  • Rental deposit
  • Fixed utility or service charges
  • Once-off administration, connection or key charges
  • Transport, packing and cleaning

Treat unknown costs as unknown

An amount that is not stated is not zero. Ask the advertiser to explain usage-based electricity, water, Wi-Fi and any compulsory monthly fee before you decide.

Keep a small buffer

Leave room for food, transport and unexpected setup costs after moving. Never transfer a deposit only because someone says another renter is waiting.
